Forty years after her death, the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is fast becoming an art-world superstar. Her powerful and vivid paintings are selling for over $3 million, and traveling exhibitions of her work are circling the globe. Originally published in German as an exhibition catalog, this volume presents a dozen essays, accompanied by her work and that of Mexican contemporaries. In an attempt to provide context, her home (the Blue House) and her life with and without her famous husband, Diego Rivera, are illustrated with scores of photographs. A chronology and discussion of her life are also offered, but Hayden Herrera's Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo (LJ 1/15/83) is more complete and more coherent in this regard. Moreover, Herrera's Frida Kahlo: The Paintings (LJ 5/15/92) presents her work in comparable size and quality with more focus. This catalog should be considered only for comprehensive or specialized collections.
