The West Georgia Area is known as Tallapoosa, was once called Possum Snout. Creek Indians and a few settlers lived near the Tallapoosa River. Tallapoosa is the Creek Indian word for golden water. The few settlers left after the Indians went across the Mississippi River to live, wanted to incoporate. The town decided the name Possum Snout was not a very dignified name so they selected Tallapoos as the new name.
