Item Description

Medium: Acrylic and ink

Artist: Christine Loula Kopplin

Artist Vision: I was inspired by one of my favorite pastimes from childhood (and well into my adulthood): the Spirograph. My son and I were making some together one evening, and it began to wash over me how many parallels to music there are. As I reached for a particular combination of outer wheel, center circle, and pen position I thought I had previously used; it occurred to me that no matter how precise and specific and "mathematical" the given components are, what results is never the same thing twice, and what a beautiful surprise it often is. Further, the idea of taking a single element (in this case the cello's graceful f-hole shape) and discovering even a few of the endless patterns is something I find truly fascinating!

Item Special Note

Artist Biography: Christine Loula Kopplin is a native of the Quad Cities. After graduating from Augustana with a BA in Art and Art Education, she moved to Chicago where she lived for 14 years. She and her husband returned to Rock Island to raise their two sons, and Kopplin is back at Augustana, working in the Advancement Office. She's also taught classes through their Kaleidoscope program and tries to bring art experiences to kids whenever she can. Kopplin enjoys working with a variety of materials, especially acrylics, pastels, and charcoal, and she particularly enjoys doing calligraphy.
