Item Description

EcoSchools is a program sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation to educate children about the earth, its wild inhabitants and the conservation of the earth to support life.  This is an international program directed at the education of young people as future stewards of the world in which we live.  The Eco-Schools program supports schools, teachers and students through providing opportunities and curriculum to incorporate pathways in the school environment that highlight one of seven methods to educate about earth conservation.  At our school we have chosen to pursue the biodiversity pathway and the Waste and Consumption pathway.  In bringing  the biodiversity pathway to our school, we will learn about the native diversity and how we can support it through a rooftop garden area that supplies food and water to birds and butterflies.  Via the waste consumption pathway we will educate our children on reduce, reuse and recycle.  Part of that education will include composting our food waste through a worm farm, which will fertilize our rooftop gardens and our indoor gardens.  The city will retrieve our excess fertilizer and use it in the parks.

The benefits of participating in this program is the resources it offers our school.  They have curriculum to introduce and sustain programs like these.  They provide information to sustain teacher education and awareness.  Most importantly the student outcomes from this program are enormous.  Children have a greater connection to the scientific world.  There is a dramatic improvement in critical thinking.  Children experience a greater sense of responsibility both for their world and for their own actions.

A fundamental tenet of a Montessori education is to inspire a wonderment in and a sense of responsibility for the natural world.  At times, given that we are in a city, this can be hard to maintain in our school.  This program supports our teachers in having an ongoing stewardship of the natural world in our youngsters.
