Item Description
"Safari" is a beautiful painting of a giraffe by blind artist Thomas Massa. Framed size is 23"x19".
Thomas Massa was born in 1945 and is a 16 year veteran. He served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman attached to the Marine Corp during the Vietnam era and also served in the US Army Reserve as a Military Police Officer. He was injured during the Cuban crisis which entailed a long hospital recovery and thereafter a bus accident left him legally blind.
He started painting in 1987 when he was given a paint set for Christmas as a way to pass the time. As he had always enjoyed the ambiance of the ocean and shorelines and kept those wonderful moments in his memory, he has endeavored to have his paintings express this love of the seashore. Although he cannot get back the vision that he lost, his memories are still very real and vivid and painting has opened a door to a wonderful new world. He takes pride that he took second place in entries to the National Blind Veterans Painting forum for his painting of a lighthouse while in Connecticut.
Thomas has continued his passion for painting and his works have been acquired by many who have appreciated his tenacity and talent all across the United States. He now lives in Southern California with his guide dog, River, and continues his craft.
