Item Description

The 30/30 Anniversary Print Project was an exhibition and silent auction supporting the youth education scholarship programs of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and Burlington City Arts, in honor of the Flynn Center and BCA's 30th anniversaries. Participating artists, lead by artist/project coordinators Gregg Blasdel, Jennifer Koch and Sumru Tekin, created prints in BCA's Print Studio at 250 Main Street, as well as the studio of Jennifer Koch.

"I have had fun with the project. Truly, it has been great to work with a variety of artist and I have learned a few things along the way. For many people I have worked with, it has been the first time or it had been a long time since they had made a woodblock print. I am inspired with the amount of work that the artist have committed to the project. That said, the process is that the artists come up with a design, drawing and concept, and transfer the image to a woodblock which is carved with both traditional woodcutting tools and non-traditional tools. The block is then prepped for printing by rolling oil based printing ink onto the surface and then running the block and paper through the press at the BCA print studio. The only parameters for the project is the size of the paper, 17" x 22" and that the image is to be printed. My approach has been to show the artist all of the possibilities with woodblock printing and help guide them along the way. Most artist have been an integral part of the printing process.

As far as my own print and printmaking practices I have been working collaboratively with my husband, art partner, Gregg Blasdel to make large scale collaborative woodblock print for the last 7 years so it has been a departure to work solo. For my print I choose a knot, which is a continuation from my last series of woodblock prints that I started on Print Project Four in 2002 when I worked with master print-maker, David Curcio. The knot print that I have created is a Triangular Knot with three two-sided compartments that has been distorted and replicated.”
