Item Description
Title & Artist: "The Mod Cod" – by Ken Coder
Medium & Size: Paper and paint (decoupage) on wood. 21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D. For indoor display only.
Artist Statement: I use my art as a getaway from the daily tasks and chores that tend to bog us down everyday. I don’t get to the studio as often as I would like, but when I do I tend to get lost in the process of my work. I got started only a few years ago with this side of my life and it has brought out some interesting pieces! I, like so many others these days, am finding a way to "upcycle" to create my art. Found objects and "tailings" of wood help me to create unique pieces that folks can rest assured are one of a kind! My art expresses the beauty of wood and its connection to me and what I appreciate in life.
The scales of my codfish were cut from a painting by my niece, Megan Clark.
Artist Biography: I have been working in art since 2010. I started out making our Christmas card from a photograph that I took at the beach of some periwinkles. My first work was sold in a show at Endicott College in 2012, and I have been trying to make functional art ever since.
I deal mainly with wood, driftwood, shells, and found objects. I love to upcycle and frequently find treasures in others’ castoffs. I am a huge fan of the great outdoors, and that plays a large part in some of my most recent projects: turning stumps into coffee tables. At last year’s Marblehead Festival of Arts, my "Faces" coffee table won Best of Show for Crafts and also the People’s Choice award. I was pleased and honored to make a Cod for the 50th Festival this year to help with the fundraising effort.
Thanks for your interest in the MFoA and please help support your local artists. Hope to see you all at this year’s show!
Hosting Business: "The Mod Cod" is on display at Bus Stop, 85 Washington St., Marblehead, MA.
