Item Description
Pastel - Iris Fine Art Print, 30" by 22.5" (2014) (unframed) by local Ossining, NY artist and Caldecott Medal winning children's author, Jerry Pinkney. Jerry worked with Teatown Educator, Erin Baker, and Teatown's red-tail hawk, Rusty while he was creating this print.
An excerpt about some exciting developments in Jerry's life from his web site:
"It has been another busy, inspiring year for me so far! In September, I received the Carle Honors Artist Award from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. I strongly support the museum’s mission of collecting the great art created for picture books and bringing it to the public, so I was honored to accept this award.
In 2014, the Philadelphia Museum of Art added my illustration for the 'John Henry' book cover to its permanent collection. And in January of 2015, it can be seen in 'Represent: 200 years of African American Art,' a new exhibition at PMA.
The R. Michelson Gallery in Northampton, Massachusetts is currently showing my book illustrations in an exhibition titled 'Jerry Pinkney: Imaginings,' along with some personal art that I began working on this summer. Not since art school have I devoted so much time, energy, and vision to exploring new mediums and revisiting old ones. In this independent study, I am working in pastels, oil pastels, oils, and charcoal, often combining the mediums and abandoning familiar methods and work processes. It feels good to take risks, and there is something both liberating and scary in exploring a new aesthetic.
Looking ahead, I will soon have completed my trilogy of Aesop’s Fables, as another of my favorite adaptations,“The Grasshopper and the Ants,” is due to be published in April. I’m also hard at work on five new projects, which I am excited to share soon!
Lastly, the office of Art in Embassies at the United States Department of State, and Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan have invited me to participate in an exhibition for the United States Embassy in Congo, Brazzaville. This exhibition will be on view for the duration of Ambassador Sullivan's tour of duty."
