Item Description
A low relief sculpture of metal and stone, framed. Size is: 14" x 18" x 3". Entitled "Andromeda", created by Sally S. Fine.
A note from the Artist, Sally S. Fine: The series started with an interest in the human nervous system. And the branching and arcing of river-like arteries from point-to-point appeared wherever I looked: maps, charts, and aerial photos.
In the sky, the point to point connections were found in the constellations. At the opposite end of the scale, the point-to-point traveling through three-dimensional space reveals itself in microscopic organisms such as the unicellular dinoflagellate.
This dramatic difference in scale is striking in its visual similarities. The constellations bring with them thousands of years of verbal and visual history from myriad cultures.
I like the irony of depicting deep space and time stitched together on a planar, plastic surface punctuated with holes and connected with wires. The constellations present a graphic tension among all the “space junk” that is out there in orbit. The sky’s domed palette provides me with questions, speculations and stories.
Andromeda
Poseidon, lord of the sea, had Andromeda tied to a serpent’s rock as sacrifice for the arrogance of her mother, Cassiopeia, in claiming greater beauty than his sea nymphs.
