Item Description

Try your hand at woodcarving with North House Folk School instructor Mike Schelmeske. Whether you want to make a traditional paddle or carve a spoon, Mike will teach you the history of this northwoods craft and show you how to maneuver simple hand tools, catering to your experience level. You will learn about wood selection and wood grain considerations, as well as theory of shape. You may choose from a variety of different classic designs, and you will leave the course with a custom-designed wood-crafted item. This one-day course is flexible depending on the student’s interests. Tools will be provided, and any experience level is welcome.

Mike's interest in Native American and Scandinavian traditions has kept him constantly pursuing boreal forest crafts and materials for project ideas. He finds utility craft particularly intriguing, and the thought of putting his crafts to work on an everyday level keeps him searching for the next project. Whether it's carving toys for his daughter Aurora, or shaping canoe paddles with a crooked knife he fashioned from an old file, Mike's ingenuity and approach to craft are refreshing.

Item Special Note

One-day course for one person, available during Spring/Summer 2016. Winner will receive Mike's contact information to schedule the class directly.

Class will take place in Grand Marais, MN.
