Bernard Buffet was born in Paris in 1928 and died in 1999 in Tourtour. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts from 1943 to 1945. After that time period he worked independently in his studio. He first exhibited his work, along with a number of other artists, in 1946, and then had work shown at a variety of venues and events. His distinctive style soon caught the public's eye. He had his first one-person exhibition in Paris in 1947. As his work became more and more popular, he exhibited in most of the art capitals of the world. In 1973, the Bernard Buffet Museum was founded in Surugadaira, Japan. In all, Buffet created more than 8,000 paintings and a large number of prints.
