Item Description
This large and dramatically figured bowl was handmade using a lathe by master wood turner Lou Pignolet, from a large cherry burl. The burl came from private land in southeastern Wisconsin. The bowl measures 18 inches in diameter, 5 inches high, and has a wall thickness of 1/2 inch. The burl was turned end-grain to give a dramatic bark edge that follows the outer contours of the burl. The grain figuring is spectacular with tiny bird’s eyes, swirling lines, and contrasting colors from reds to greens. Some of the lines give interesting images including some large bird’s eye figuring. This bowl is a collector’s piece and for a person who really loves the beauty and feel of wood. It would set the mood of an entire room. The bowl has a natural tung oil/beeswax-mineral oil finish and is food safe, so it can be used for serving and displaying food or other items.
This bowl is shown on Lou’s web site with additional images and a fuller description. The web site also includes information on turning a burl into a bowl. Lou also has a private wood turning experience and a gift certificate item in this auction. The turning experience is for any one wanting to learn how to turn a burl into a bowl.
