Item Description
The lucky winner of this once in a lifetime experience + up to 11 guests will take a private excursion to the historic Mt. Wilson Observatory, guided by Dr. John Mulchaey, Director of Carnegie Observatories, and KPCC Science Reporter Sanden Totten.
Depending on the time of year, the visit will be from about 5:00-11:00 PM. Round-trip transportation to the Carnegie Observatories will be provided, along with an informal dinner on the mountain by Julienne's.
Weather permitting, one of the large telescopes (either a 60" mirror or a 100" mirror) will be available for viewing the night sky.
Both Mt. Wilson and the Carnegie Observatories were founded by the eminent astronomer George Ellery Hale.
For the first half of the 20th century, every great discovery in modern astronomy was made via these two telescopes, by all the great figures of that era. Mt. Wilson truly became the world center for astronomical research and today remains a peerless site in the history of the field.
Participants must be over 12 years in age, should be able to climb stairs and walk moderate distances, and should wear walking shoes. Be prepared for cool nighttime temperatures.
The trip will only be scheduled on moonless or new-moon dates, and in temperate seasons.
The experience must be redeemed by January 1, 2017. After this date, it will no longer be valid.
