Item Description

Point Reyes National Seashore Association is proud to partner with Dr. Ben Becker, marine ecologist and director of the National Park Service's Pacific Coast Science & Learning Center at the Point Reyes National Seashore for the ultimate tidepool experience for eight (ages 7 and up encouraged).

Invite up to seven special friends to join you to explore one of the largest and least visited rocky intertidal sites in Marin County between Bolinas and Muir beaches. Dr. Becker will guide your guests along the rocky intertidal zone, where you will learn about the incredible diversity of animal and plant life and how special adaptations allow them to thrive in this extreme habitat.

During these extreme low-tidal events*, your party will have the best chance to discover sea anemones, purple sea urchins, sea stars, limpets, chitins, colorful sea slugs and tiny crabs that live in this hidden world. Dr. Becker will also discuss current monitoring and research programs around the Seashore that help park managers care for our fragile seaside resources.

The winning bidder will receive The Intertidal Wilderness: A Photographic Journey through Pacific Coast Tidepools, by Anne Wertheim Rosenfeld from our friends at University California Press. This stunning book is a photographic exploration of the tidepools of the Pacific coast, from Baja California to as far north as southeast Alaska. The lush photographs capture in striking color the enormous variety of life and biological detail in the intertidal zone along one of the world's most spectacular coastlines. The interpretative text and captions describe telltale signs of ecological relationships and processes, helping the seashore explorer to appreciate ecological interactions and their consequences. The text delves into the roles of competition, predation, reproduction, natural variation in space and time, and color that characterize this vibrant ecosystem.
