Item Description

The technical spring creeks of Wisconsin's Driftless Area and Central Sands can challenge even the most experienced trout angler. These innovative patterns, tied by central Wisconsin fly tier Rich Mlodzik, are tried and true, and sure to give you an edge on these tiny-brained fish that are so inexplicably difficult to catch. Rich's tying skills are on full display here - well proportioned, pleasing to the eye, very visible on the water, and irresistible to fish - and these 5 patterns and 30 flies represent some of the most important food sources to Wisconsin trout: caddisflies, stoneflies, crickets, and ants. Heck, you could even fool a bluegill or bass or two with them.

  • RM Cricket (#14): Great "terrestrial" pattern, to be fished from May through September. Fish it in a meadow on a warm day after the morning breeze kicks up, and hang on! Rich's go-to dry fly.
  • Yellow Sally (#16): Fish this high-visible pattern from May to July. Very effectively mimics the small stonefly for which it is named.
  • Poly-Wing Caddis Tan (#14): One of the most important insects for Driftless Area trout anglers. Fish are always looking for caddisflies, as they hatch all summer long. This very buoyant pattern is effective on a dead drift, or, if you want to elicit violent strikes, skittered across the surface.
  • Foam Butt Ant (#16): Cinnamon-colored with a high-vis peach post, this is a killer pattern. When trout are taking ants, they are TAKING ANTS. This pattern is a critical addition to any spring creek trouter's fly box.
  • Poly-Wing Caddis Black (#16): A fantastic imitation of the little black caddis, a welcome hatch that arrives around Mother's Day each year, and really gets the fish excited. Same pattern as the tan caddis, but smaller size to imitate the natural.
