Item Description

The Moses Soyer work is an oil painting that measures approximately 14" x 9 3/4" and is mounted in a frame with an inner fabric mat. The framed painting measures 21" x 16 3/4." It was donated to Congregation Ahavath Sholom’s BiddingForGood/Fundraising auction by a member of the congregation. It was handed down to her by one of her parents.

Moses Soyer was an important artist in the American realist movement at the beginning of the 20th century. Born in Russia in 1899, he and his family, including his twin brother, Raphael Soyer, and his brother Isaac, both also well-known painters, immigrated to New York in 1912.  Moses studied at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Ferrer Art School in NYC, where he studied with Ashcan school artists Robert Henri and George Bellows.  He taught art the Contemporary Art School and The New School.

His work is in the collections of the  Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among other museums.

Moses Soyer's untitled painting at the Honolulu Museum of Art is an excellent example of his intimate and penetrating portraits of ordinary people, his speciality.
