Item Description
Bid for four (4) tickets to a performance by Steve Riley on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 8pm at the Emelin Theatre.
The superior musicianship, songwriting skills, harmony vocals and irresistible grooves have distinguished Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys as one of the best bands in the genre. Formed in 1988, the band’s stunningly clean and cohesive performance of Cajun French music from the backwaters of Southwest Louisiana propelled them into the world music limelight early on. Their third release, Trace of Time, garnered them a Grammy nomination in the worldwide field of traditional folk music. They were nominated again in 2004 for Bon Reve, in 2009 for Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and again in 2011 for Grand Isle.
From the day they started, they have gone from strength to strength. Never before in Cajun music has a comparable wealth of skills been brought to the same table. "From a cajun hot two-step, to an a cappella ballad, and then something that sounds like Howlin’ Wolf in lust with a Creole girl...[the] band is brimful of sounds as compelling, diverse and exotic as one evening of music can possibly hold” says Barry Ancelet, professor of folklore at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Their style has grown from the exclusively traditional music of Steve Riley's mentors Dewey Balfa, Belton Richard, and Walter Mouton, to a more personal style that still has a distinctively Cajun sound. They improvise and create within the tradition, finding poetry in historical manuscripts and in the language of real life, and they manage to do this in a way that both innovates and preserves. Matching their uncompromising respect for tradition with a forward-looking vision, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys have set the standard for modern Cajun music. Their musicianship, songwriting skills, harmony vocals and irresistible grooves mark them as one of the best bands to come out of South Louisiana.
