Item Description

Swinburne with Circles, 2014, archival pigment ink print, edition #2 of 3, 56 x 38.4 ins.

Mary Reid Kelley’s unique black and white videos, set in nineteenth century Paris, the Western Front during World War I, and the Crete of classical myth, have been presented at museums internationally, including the Tate Modern, ICA Boston, and SITE Santa Fe. Ms. Kelley, who has been profiled in the PBS Series Art 21, writes the script, draws all of the "sets,” creates all of the costumes and props, and performs in her videos. In 2015, Mary Reid Kelley: Working Objects and Videos, her 2014 exhibition at The Dorsky, won a prestigious award from the International Association of Art Critics. In 2011, Ken Johnson in the New York Times wrote: “As artist, poet, actor, filmmaker, set and costume designer and intellectual mischief maker, Mary Reid Kelley . . . is a talent to be reckoned with.” This drawing was created by the artist for her video Swinburne’s Pasiphae (2014), part of an ongoing trilogy that explores the mythological Minotaur’s tragic family tree.
