Item Description

Marc Chagall (Russia 1887-1985 France), After the success of their 1956 collaboration on a portfolio of color lithographs to commemorate the publication of Chagall's long delayed set of etchings for the Bible, Antoine Teriade and Chagall agreed to devote another issue of Verve to another set of illustrations illuminating Chagall's Bible. Meyer Shapiro has called Chagall one of the greatest religious artists of all time, and these lithographs show why: powerful drawing, intense colors, and, most of all, compassion for the people depicted in the Biblical narratives. Rachel hides her father's household gods (M. 242). Original color lithograph, 1960.50 signed and numbered impressions plus 6500 unsigned impressions for Verve (of which yours is one; although your piece is signed, the signature is very likely not the artist's). Image size: 356x253mm.
