Item Description

This is a ‘slab’ of a branch of the Beech tree showing the interior and exterior forms. It is shown here as a ‘stele’ or standing piece in honor of the tree. Highly finished on the two main surfaces, it has no finishing material. And invites the viewer to touch.

Artisan: James Fuhrman

James Fuhrman has lived and worked at the Old Lincoln School, Glenmoore, PA for 45 years. He redesigned the one-room school house in 1998 when he married Fern Denney. He has had commissions and exhibited and installed works in Scotland, Brazil and Japan and many U.S. sites including New York City, Philadelphia, Miami, Michigan and Pendle Hill. He is profoundly involved in creating spaces… real and metaphoric …spaces for gathering…spaces that ask viewers—to pause—to listen—to make connections with one another and to the world around them. At any scale, two or three dimensional, from two inches to 50 feet, the works invite viewers to enter, physically and psychically, emotionally. Pendle Hill brings an audience of people who will use and appreciate the contemplative nature of my work.
