Item Description
The return of the Gundalow to the waters of the Piscataqua was a happy event indeed. Have you been on it? Have you enjoyed a sail on the flat-decked boat that rides with the wind as it transports you back to time? Have you joined in to help raise the sail, take the helm, learn the boat's history? Now's your chance.
This one year Gundalow "Mate" Membership includes two sail passes and invitations to member events and work sessions at The Gundalow Company. The company was formed in 2002 as a non-profit aimed at preserving the rich history of this treasured vessel and the region it served.
Between 1690 and 1900, gundalows dominated the waters of the Piscataqua region. Captain Edward H. Adams (1860–1950), the builder and captain of the Fanny M, the last commercial gundalow, worked hard to generate concern about the health of Great Bay Estuary. His efforts inspired the Piscataqua Gundalow Project, through which a group of visionaries and volunteers built a historically accurate replica gundalow in 1982 that bears his name. Built on the grounds of Strawbery Banke using traditional methods, Captain Edward H. Adams represents 300 years of local maritime heritage.
The Gundalow Company emerged to acquire ownership of the gundalow. In 2011, Paul Rollins was hired by the Gundalow Company to build the Piscataqua on the grounds of Strawbery Banke. The company uses this boat and its various events to preserve the area's maritime heritage and environment. Come be a part of it. Come bid on this great item.
