Paul Hitchen’s paintings are illustrations of little pieces of his life and experience. He grew up on the water, and have been a lifelong sailor, his subject is often nautical or water-related. Currently he is producing a series of paintings from a long road trip through the South West United States. This series focuses on painting kids, baseball and airports and his style is evolving, becoming less illustrational and more simplistic with a bolder use of color.
“Rose Island” was painted in plein air while sitting on the rocks at Fort Adams in Newport, RI. It depicts a fleet of small racers leaving Sail Newport for a day of racing and instruction. It was a hot, humid, still August morning. The wind would come up later.
