Monotype

Margo Lemieux has been an artist since the 1st grade when she got into trouble with her teacher for “decorating” her workbook. After earning a degree in fine arts in painting from BU, she worked as a graphic designer, tee-shirt artist, newspaper correspondent, children’s book author and illustrator, and other interesting things. Currently she is an associate professor at Lasell College, Newton, MA. She still doesn’t know what she wants to do when she grows up.

Typhoon Haiyan on Ha Long Bay” is a monotype etching. Having been in Vietnam in fall of 2013, when Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit Southeast Asia, was devastating the Philippines inspired this piece. Then it headed right for our home base of Hanoi. Fortunately it had lost much of its impact by the time it reached us but I imagined the raging wind and rain on the World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay, where I had cruised earlier in the week. I wanted to capture the energy and force of the wind and rain on the limestone outcroppings and the small boat just barely visible on the left. This piece was etched into a copper plate and then inked with Prussian blue and burnt sienna ink. I use the traditional etching techniques, much the same way Rembrandt would have done in the seventeenth century.
