Poster
“Tales of Hoffman - 1951” is an original vintage theatrical linen backed one-sheet movie poster. Truman Reed’s family had a cottage at Chautauqua Institution in upstate NY. The Institute had a small movie theatre that operated only in the summer months. He was about 11 years old when he got the job of sweeping out the movie theater between shows. Part of his job was to change the movie posters at the front of the theater. For some reason, Truman kept the posters including “Tales of Hoffman.” The poster features, actor, Robert Rounseville as he first appeared as Hoffman in the City Opera production in 1949 and in the British film production (1951), in which he co-starred with Moira Shearer.
Artist Marc Stone create the image for the poster and was also a painter of World War II propaganda posters in the UK.
