Item Special Note
Marie Rogers (Meansville, GA, 1922-2010) was not only “one of the few women folk potters in Georgia’s history,” she was “the last practitioner of the older Jugtown [middle Georgia] tradition,” wrote John Burrison in his book Brothers in Clay. She was the widow of Jugtown-trained, fourth-generation potter Horace Rogers, who taught her the craft. After Horace was killed in a car accident in 1962, Marie decided to take up the pottery trade. She controlled every step of the pottery-making process, from mixing clay and formulating glazes to firing. She continued making pottery well into her 80s, including her signature figural pieces of soldiers, U.S. Presidents, Elvis, angels, “mountain men” and herself. Rogers has been written up in several books, including John A. Burrison's Brothers in Clay: The Story of Georgia Folk Pottery, Talking with the Turners: Conversations with Southern Folk Potters by Charles R. Mack, Raised in Clay by Nancy Sweezy and Outsider Art by Kathy Moses.
