"Burpee painted some of the most beautiful Impressionist seascapes and winter landscapes done in his generation and during certain periods of his work might properly be classed as the most Monet-like of all American painters. His long career encompassed numerous stylistic changes, however, and Howlett traces burpees evolution from mid-victorian to Post-Impressionist painter and examines the influence of Luminism and Tonalism of his work."
