Item Description
This is a wonderful limited edition print by American artist Jenness Cortez. This beautiful print depicts a portrait of the 1990 American Horse of the Year, Criminal Type. Hall of Fame Gary Stevens sits astride this champion son of Alydar, whose 1990 season featured victories in the Hollywood Gold Cup, Pimlico Special, Metropolitan Mile Handicap (Met Mile) and Saratoga's own Whitney Stakes. Framed under plexi-glass, this print is especially prized as it features a remarque of the head of Criminal Type. This is an original drawing by the artist. It is numbered 27/250. Jenness Cortez is a well-respected realist artist. She began her studies at the age of 16 under the tutelage of noted Dutch painter, Antonius Raemaekers. Cortez originally gained notoriety for her sporting depictions of horse racing at the historic Saratoga racetrack. Her paintings hang in numerous public and private collections including those of Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, HRH Queen Elizabeth, II, Mr. Ogden Mills Phipps, Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, Gov. George Pataki, Gov. Hugh Carey, and the New York State Museum among many others.
The print is in overall very good condition. The frame exhibits scattered dings and scratches consistent with age and method of display/storage. The frame measures 29 3/4" x 25 1/4" with an interior view of 27 3/4" x 23". The print within the matting is 22" x 17 3/8". The plate impression of the print is 19 3/4" x 14 1/8". This handsome print is a fantastic example of the fine artistry of Jenness Cortez.
