Item Description

Your donation of $50.00 allows ADK to recruit, train and support one Citizen Scientist Volunteer to prevent the spread of either aquatic invasive species or Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. To date we've trained over 87 volunteers and need your help to reach even more.

The Backcountry Forest Monitors project is focused on early detection of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) and other forest pests in the Adirondack Park and asks volunteers to adopt a favorite section of trail, stream bank, or lakeshore and survey it for Forest Pests at least once each year.

The purpose of the Backcountry Water Monitors Project is to engage active hikers and outdoor recreationists in monitoring the beautiful waters of New York's Adirondack Backcountry for invasive species. The citizen scientists who join the project will be trained to identify the species that threaten the health of our Adirondack lakes, ponds, and streams, and will be given the opportunity to adopt a waterbody for an annual survey.

The training consists of classroom education on invasive species and data management, as well as a field portion where participants will learn a backcountry survey protocol.
