You hear the satisfying moans of a good meal, the sizzle of fajitas hot off the grill, the cultural music playing, and the warm greeting from a friendly host, and you know you've arrived. The Mex Authentic, with its adobe and brick decor and plethora of authentic Mexican dishes and intoxicating aromas, has opened its doors in downtown Santa Barbara. It's like walking into yourAbuelita's home. The restaurant is located at 413 State Street.
Gabe and Tori Franco fell in love with Santa Barbara on a recent trip, and decided to make this their new home. They currently own another restaurant in Orange County called Flamingo's.
In competing with the countless number of Mexican food restaurants in Santa Barbara, Tori Franco has only one thing to say, "We feel like there's plenty of room for everybody, and every different region of Mexico has different recipes."
All of the dishes are freshly made after you place your order, from Jalisciense recipes that have been handed down for generations in the Franco family.
"We designed it to be a comfort food type restaurant. Good for families, date nights...it's just a casual place that we want the locals to be involved in," said Mrs. Franco. "This is the corner restaurant where you can go 2 to 3 times a week and feel comfortable."
Customer favorites include the Coctel de Camarón (Shrimp Cocktail), shrimp soup, Enchiladas Vallarta, and the churros and flan for dessert. The flan in particular is made in-house, and with its creamy and sweet caramel sauce coat, melts right in your mouth. A heavenly treat for your taste buds. It's soul food.
The Mex Authentic counts with a wide variety of Mexican and local beers, and more, at its bar. And if prices weren't fair enough, come in during any given day of the week and enjoy discounted items on some of the restaurants most popular dishes.
