Item Description

A day out of London consisting of a private tour of the Bodleian Library and Ashmolean Museum and Evensong at Christ Church Cathedral. The visit will be hosted by a distinguished author and poet.

The Bodleian Library is a working library forming part of Oxford University, is one of the oldest libraries in Europe and is regarded as one of the highest peaks in the landscape of international scholarship.

In its present incarnation, the library has a continuous history dating back to 1602, but, its roots date back even further. Thomas Bodley (an ancestor by marriage of the Chairman of the British Soldiers Fund) initiated the refounding of the library in 1598 and it was named after him. The Bodleian Library Group now cares for some 11 million items on 117 miles of shelving and has a staff of over 400. The library includes 4 copies of the Magna Carta.

The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology is the world's first university museum built in 1678-1683.  Christ Church Cathedral has an outstanding musical tradition from the 16th century and weekday evensong is an unforgettable experience.
