Item Description

Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Bordeaux wine from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, ranked among the Grands Crus Classé for red wine in the Classification of Graves wine of 1953 and 1959. The winery and vineyards are located south of the city of Bordeaux, in the commune of Martillac.

The estate originated in the 14th century with the house of Verrier Du Boscq who planted vines on a gravelly plateau named Lafitte already in 1365. In 1720 it was bought by the Scotsman Georges Smith who added his name and who built the manor house of the property. Visit the winery's Wikipedia page for more info on its history.

This 2011 Grand Crus Classé is from an assemblage of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and a drop of Petit Verdot, the wine will be aged in 60% new oak. This is a deep, dark-colored Pessac Leognan with a perfume offering licorice, coffee, earth and jammy black raspberry. Rich, full-bodied, plush and intense, the wine ends with a fresh, long, floral and sweet finish with spice, espresso and black cherry.

For a nice Bordeaux trio this wine is partnered with two bottles of Clos du Jaugueyron 2007, from owner/winemaker Michel Théron. This wine is a rare find in the U.S. Robert Parker says about Clos du Jaugueyron: "Rich, concentrated, perfumed, and impeccably well made. If you can find it, it is well worth buying."
