"This book chronicles my descent from perfect health to near death from heart failure in less than eight months. My surgery to implant a mechanical pump (LVAD), my frustration with the medical community, my journey finding a cure to my disease and my recovery. I discuss my life with the Thoratec Heartmate II left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and how my life changed. This book is about taking control of your health. Optimal health can not be dispensed from a pharmacy."  Thomas Martin

REVIEWS:

"Thomas Martin brings forth an epic journey from the inception of his heart failure due to a virus. He speaks about the events in the beginning of his journey through heart failure. Then transitions from the first stage of events to dealing with the doctors and medicine with all the frustrations with the medical community. Then he moves into the more holistic medicine and vitamins that help him to take control of his health bringing him to the light at the end of the tunnel or the end result his healing and having the heart pump removed and becoming that 1% that does over come heart disease."

I too am an LVAD patient working toward recovery.

"The author is an excellent writer which made this book an easy read. He kept it very interesting. My wife and I read this book together on our separate Kindles. We literally devoured it. And we can vouch for its authenticity. My wife, at age 66, by the grace of God, is also a member of the 1 Percent (or possibly 2%) club. Her LVAD was implanted at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and explanted 14 months later. Many of the author's experiences paralleled hers. I would highly recommend this book to any heart patients who have just had their pants scared off by cardiologists telling them they have only a few options left: heart transplant, LVAD, or die. One caveat, though. Every case is different. The author had a lot of problems, especially during the explantation of the LVAD. But these problems were unique to his situation. So don't let his experiences scare you.

The author's view on nutrition seems rather radical. But he has done the research. One thing is certain -- we Americans need to get serious about our health and stop putting garbage into our bodies. Our healthcare system cannot sustain it. The author points to many resources that we can turn to in order to improve our eating habits and therfore our general health. I, for one, will be checking them out."
