About the Authors:

I.M. Lerner is a wife, mother, and small business owner with a background in marketing and IT. She loves to read econ books and articles for fun (yes, she is an econ geek), enjoys research, and is fascinated by what makes people tick. She is the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors and cherishes family above all else. She is a naturalized citizen who knows how absolutely exceptional this great nation really is. And she's writing these books so that our kids have a fighting chance. You can visit her at underthestaircase.com.

Catherine L. Osornio has written fiction and nonfiction stories and articles for magazines, newsletters, and an early readers' program. Her first picture book, The Declaration of Independence from A to Z, was released in 2010. Catherine lives in Southern California with her husband and four children. You can visit her at www.catherineosornio.com.

"So, you're the ones..."

"A mysterious package appears just as Maya and Nate start helping in their grandparents' store. Inside is just one book: a faded copy of Free to Choose. In a race against time, they must decipher a series of cryptic messages to discover the secret under the staircase. But can a bunch of kids really solve the centuries-old riddle? Can they save their beloved town before it's too late?"

"Psst! Parents and Teachers: The first book in the series introduces a variety of Milton Friedman's concepts-- the Power of the Market, the Tyranny of Controls, What's Wrong with Our Schools?, and other topics-- using examples from kids' day-to-day lives in school, with friends, and in familiar situations."

"As a Kickstarter supporter of I.M. Lerner's "Under the Staircase" series of economic adventure books for kids, I saw great promise in what she set out to do. Her books would entertain young readers and teach important values that my wife and I want to instill in our children: personal responsibility, individual liberty, and economic freedom. This is a remarkably ambitious goal for children's literature. I was pleased to see that a lot of other people shared my excitement, that Lerner exceeded her fundraising goal and was able to undertake the project.

Having read the first book in the series, I'm impressed. Along with co-author Catherine Osornio, Lerner has hit the mark. You're quickly engrossed in the mystery. As the kids at the center of the action solve puzzles and riddles, you learn together why they must--and how they can--stem the tide of ill-conceived policies being inflicted on the residents in their town, including a threat to the school program the kids cherish. As the story unfolds, it delivers on the promise of teaching its three core values. Some lessons are explicit, others implicit, and there are many opportunities for parents to discuss them with their children.

This first installation establishes a delightful cast of characters and reveals just enough about the secret under the staircase to set the stage for an ongoing series. This is a real treasure for parents, a great way to help teach some of the values that we can't count on schools to address satisfactorily, if at all. I can't wait until our kids, now just under 5 and 2 years, are a bit older so that we can begin to share what I hope will be a large and growing number of these marvelous stories with them!"

"I shared this book with my nephews and they are hooked. From the onset, they were in love with the fun, relatable characters Lerner and Osornio have created here. And they were kept on the hook by the mysteries and clues along the way.

The values being taught in these books are presented in a non-preachy, engrossing story that kept us turning the pages to find out what would happen next.

We can't wait to see the next in this series—and hopefully, teachers will discover this gem and share it with their students. This is a sure fire way to make Econ fun."
