Item Description

Bid to win this wonderful autographed copy of Cleveland's West Side Market: 100 Years and Still Cooking, by local author/photographer duo Laura and Barney Taxel, and a signed 8x10 fine art photographic print of an image from the book.

Cleveland's West Side Market is a matchless culinary and cultural resource, a nationally significant architectural treasure, and part of the city's distinctive urban landscape. In continuous use since it opened in 1912, the market is among the oldest municipally owned and operated retail food arcades and one of only a handful of such places left in the country. The book chronicles the history of this notable landmark and all it offers consumers and culinary aficionados. Written by two well-known Cleveland food writers, the book takes readers on a nostalgic tour of the market building, outdoor arcades, and into the lives of many vendors and market families who are the true foundation of this historic public space. The volume is rich with many rare, and until now unpublished, vintage and contemporary photographs, and images that provide a delightful armchair tour of this magnificent landmark, which is a must-see destination for food lovers.

Laura Taxel has been writing about food and the people who prepare it for most of her professional life. She still finds it hard to believe she gets paid to eat. Her award wining articles have appeared in magazines and newspapers around the country and were selected for Best Food Writing, a national anthology published annually, four times, in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2014. Cleveland Ethnic Eats, her guide to northeast Ohio's authentic ethnic restaurants, bakeries, butchers and grocery stores, first released in 1995, updated and reissued six times and now out of print, was a local bestseller for years.

Barney Taxel has had a 37-year career as a studio and location photographer working with agencies, graphic designers, publishers, corporations, manufacturers, institutions, architects and interior designers in the creation of photographs for annual reports, advertising, catalogs, packaging, book illustrations, magazines, newspapers, and websites.
