Item Description

While most Californian Chardonnays start to show their age after about five years, this 21 year old beauty barely shows any bottle aged characters. The flavours are lean and savoury, similar to a great Hermitage Blanc.

First produced in 1952, Stony Hill's Chardonnay is more reminiscent of the Chablis of Burgundy than of today’s California Chardonnays. Aged in neutral oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, they are elegant and fruity with beautiful acid structure. As a result, Stony Hill Chardonnays are eminently age worthy and grow in richness and depth for many years after bottling. This wine developed a rich, fruity bouquet. The well integrated flavors of honeyed, lemony fruit and a bit of spice gave this wine the structure and strength that the younger wines have yet to develop. We found that it had more weight to it than usual, due to a huge crop and notably ripe fruit.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 90 Points

This crisp, old style California Chardonnay appears to be made in a non-malolactic style. It offers gobs of crisp, tart, lemony/apple-like fruit, medium to full body, excellent purity, and a vivacious, crisp, well-delineated personality.
