Item Description
A wonderful piece for anyone who is interested in antique tools. The hay knife was used back in the days when hay was not baled, but stacked. Once the loose hay settled in the stack, it was very difficult to remove any hay from the stack. The hay knife was used to cut off small portions of hay to feed to the cows. Both handles were on the same side of the saw so the user could work close to the face of the stack without hitting their hand on it.
The steel knife has a curved blade with shallow teeth, two natural wood handles. It measures 34" long from the tip of the blade to the back of the handle; blade measures approx. 20" long and 2" at its widest point; handles are approx. 4 1/2" long.
Back of knife is marked with the date "July 20, 187(6?)."
