The Greene County Democrat is a weekly newspaper (published on Wednesdays) which features news of Greene County and the Alabama Black Belt with an African-American slant. The paper also has a newswire column with state, national and international news often overlooked by other newspapers. The Democrat has a number of columnists each week who comment on current affairs, including Alabama State Senator Hank Sanders, George Curry, Marion Wright Edelman, Marc Morial, Julianne Malveau, Jim Hightower and others. The paper also focuses on agriculture and rural development issues such as the upcoming 2012 Farm Bill debate, Black farmer class action suit, USDA policy changes, etc. The newspaper is published by John and Carol Zippert who are long time activists in Alabama.

John is a founding member of the RDLN Board of Directors. He is Director of Program at the Federation of Southern Cooperatives.  A letter from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. invited him to the South when he was student body president at City College in New York.
