Item Description
Clones lacemaking is a strong and vibrant tradition in the Drumlin countryside of West Monaghan in South Fermanagh. Although now enjoying a revival, this beautiful intricate art has been passed from mother to daugher since the post-famine period of the 1850's, when there were over 1,500 lascemakers in theis small area, supplying makrets in fashionable Dublin, London, Europe and the United States. By 1910 Clones was the most important centre of the crochet lacemaking in Ireland.
Clones lace is distinctive for its motifs, which reflect the lifetyle of the Drumlin countryside and are joind together by the Clones Knot.
It is chocheted with very fine cotton thread which retains an everlasting whiteness.
THis Cross of Clones lace has been uniquely handcrafted, it is apporximately 6" tall and 4" wide. It is suitable for framing.
There might be other Clones Lace pieces available for a donation to the Bizarbots Robotics team, please see Liz Brady at the auction December 4th.
Item Special Note
Donated by Liz Brady, if other items would sell, Terence will bring home from Ireland.
