DESCRIPTION

2016 Street Photography Calendar and Dates of Photographic Interest
In early November 2014, Julia Dean, founder and executive director of Los Angeles Center of Photography, announced the creation of LACP's First Annual Street Shooting Contest and Exhibition. The deadline for entries was November 24th. Jurors were Stephen McLaren, co-author of Street Photography Now, former National Geographic photographer Sam Abell and Julia. By the deadline 120 photographers had submitted 787 images. From those the jurors chose 77 photographs for gallery and online exhibition. The 2016 Street Photography Calendar features some of the best images. These photographers have donated their work to cover the cost of printing, promotion and to fund a street photography need-based scholarship for fall 2015 at Los Angeles Center of Photography.

In addition to the 12 photographs each month features a quote or quotes by famous photographers (example: Henri Cartier-Bresson - "For me, the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which - in visual terms - questions and decides spontaneously. In order to 'give a meaning' to the world, one has to feel oneself involved in what he frames through the viewfinder. This attitude requires concentration, a discipline of mind, sensitivity, and a sense of geometry. It is by great economy of means that one arrives at simplicity of expression."), birthdates of over 100 photographers, holidays and a listing of resources: street photography books, websites, blogs, online magazines, bookstores and schools that teach street photography.

The 2016 Street Photography Calendar & Dates of Photographic Interest celebrates the achievements of the above street photographers and the contributions of great photographers worldwide.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY, as defined by Wikipedia, is a genre of photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places and does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. 'Street' simply refers to a place where human activity can be seen, a place to observe and capture social interaction. The subject can even be absent of any people and can be that of object or environment where an object projects a human character or an environment is decidedly human. Framing and timing are key aspects of the craft, with the aim of creating images at a decisive or poignant moment. Alternatively, the street photographer may seek a more prosaic depiction of the scene, as a form of social documentary.
