(4) Single Class Passes to 4th Avenue Yoga.

4th Avenue Yoga is on East 5th Street, across from the Brooklyn Pizza/Sky Bar solar panels. A new studio with exotic cork flooring, Fourth Avenue Yoga offers a variety of yoga styles and tempos for all levels of experience —including Bikram inspired and other hot room classes as well as meditation and tai chi. Fourth Avenue Yoga also offers late night candle-lit restorative classes. The full class schedule is available at FourthAvenueYoga.com.

Yoga comes from a Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’ which means ‘to join’. In its spiritual sense, it is the process by which the identity of the individual soul and the Supreme Soul is realized by the Yogi. The human soul is brought into conscious communion with the Divine Reality. Just as camphor melts and becomes one with fire; just as a drop of water when it is thrown into the ocean, becomes one with the ocean; the individual soul, when it is purified, when it is freed from lust, greed, hatred and egoism, when it becomes pure (Sattvic), becomes one with the Supreme Soul. The science that teaches the way of acquiring this occult knowledge is called ‘Yoga Sastra’.

Yoga cultivates those states of mind that are conducive to peace and well-being, and to eradicate those that aren’t. If we examine our life we will discover that most of our time and energy is devoted to mundane activities, such as seeking material and emotional security, enjoying sensory pleasures, or establishing a good reputation. Although these things can make us happy for a short time, they are not able to provide the deep lasting contentment that we long for. Sooner or later our happiness turns into dissatisfaction, and we find ourselves engaged in the pursuit of more worldly pleasures. Directly or indirectly, worldly pleasures cause us mental and physical suffering by stimulating attachment, jealousy, and frustration. Happiness is a state of mind, therefore the real source of happiness lies in the mind, not in external circumstances. If true fulfilment can’t be found in worldly pleasures, then where can it be found?

Yoga promotes the circulation of chi or life energy within the body, encouraging wellness and vitality of the person. Tai Chi benefits both genders and people of all ages. At 4th Avenue Yoga, Guillermo teaches the Yang style.
