Item Description
San Diego Zoo
The roar of a lion from the Panama-California International Exposition in 1915 inspired Dr. Harry Wegeforth to start a zoo in San Diego. Now the 100-acre, world-class Zoo is home to more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals representing more than 800 species and subspecies, and a prominent botanical collection with more than 700,000 exotic plants. Conservation research is conducted here that would be difficult or impossible to achieve in wild settings, for species such as the giant panda, Fiji island iguana, Galapagos tortoise, polar bear, Bornean sun bear, and brown kiwi.
San Diego Zoo Safari Park
Opened in 1972, the Safari Park is an expansive wildlife sanctuary that is home to more than 3,500 animals representing more than 400 species. Its renowned botanical collection represents 3,500 species and over 1.5 million specimens. More than half of the Park’s 1,800 acres have been set aside as protected native species habitat. Like the Zoo, the Safari Park provides opportunities for conservation research efforts that could not take place in the wild, for species such as the African elephant, South African cheetah, southern and northern white rhino, and California condor.
