About Summer Institute for the Gifted:

The SIG Online Learning Program is an exciting 8-week online program for Gifted and Talented students. These courses offer students curriculum beyond what is offered during the school day, are wide ranging in potential interest areas for individualized learning, and engage students in hands-on learning while applying school content through speaking, writing, researching, analyzing, reasoning and questioning.  Please visit the website for more information about their program and classes.  SIG offers a great opportunity for enrichment and challenge for your top level students.

Sampling of Courses:

Students will need access to the internet on a regular basis, as well as basic word processing and presentation software (such as Word and PowerPoint). Students should have a level of comfort with creating new documents and presentations, navigating the web to conduct research (all students will be provided select links), and saving/ uploading documents; parents may need to provide assistance to students not comfortable with these tasks.

Specific login times are not set, as students attend from several time zones. Assignments are posted on a weekly basis (typically Wednesday, though this is class dependent), and have varied due dates throughout the week. Students should expect to need to access the online course at least 3 different times during the week to accomplish all tasks on a timely basis.

Instructors are typically SIG summer instructors that have experience teaching in an online format. Instructors and students interact through the course learning management system (LMS); students can also email instructors for additional information. Student email addresses are not shared with other students; however, students can interact with each other via discussion posts and LMS messages.

Sample Course Descriptions

P Level (ages 7-8)

What’s the Chance? - Have you ever wondered how likely it is to win the lottery or if you have a good chance of being the grand prize winner in a local drawing? Questions like these are answered by types of math called statistics and probability. In this course, you will review fractions, decimals, and percents and translate these functions into the math of probability! You will calculate odds using data, determine frequencies, values, and even learn about Pascal’s triangle. If you’ve ever wondered, “what’s the chance…?” Wonder no longer- just do the math!

Be a Pet Vet - Do pets have personalities? Are they trying to tell us something when they bark, scratch or whinny? If you’d like to know more about the care and understanding of pets, this class is for you. You’ll also have the chance to learn more about that special animal that you love the most, whether it’s a fish or ferret, hamster or horse! If you think you might want to be a veterinarian someday, this class is for you.

Forces of Nature - Explore the many awesome natural forces affecting our earth, air and water. When our planet releases underground energy, its crust shakes and moves, causing mountains to form and buildings to tumble. How are earthquakes and volcanoes related? How do meteorologists predict the weather? How do seismologists predict earthquakes? How do you prepare for a tsunami or hurricane? Study meteorological phenomena such as earthquakes and tornados, gain an understanding of why they happen, and if they can be predicted or avoided. Delve into the questions surrounding global climate change: could this change be causing severe weather outbreaks or is global climate change a myth?

E Level (ages 9-10)

Energy Ideas Everywhere - Everything we do is connected to energy. If you’ve flown a kite on a beautiful spring day, you’ve enjoyed the benefits of solar and wind power. This class will explore the many different forms of energy and their potential for providing vital, renewable, sustainable power. Do you have a great idea for an energy-efficient car or factory? Bring your ideas here! Discover new ways to invent and market environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient products. Use your problem-solving and other creative talents to tackle the challenges of creating truly sustainable, renewable energy. Come explore the promising, exciting fields of renewable and alternative energy, as well as more traditional energy systems, and marvel at the future possibilities they present.

Diving into the Gene Pool - The science of genetics has evolved into a field of dramatic possibilities. Discover the miracles of gene technology today, from amazing disease treatments to gene therapy, from cloning to the Human Genome Project and its genomic applications to health care and elsewhere. Can our ethical development keep up with our scientific advancement? Come be a part of the discussion, research the issues, and offer your recommendations on this current critical topic in medicine and science.

J Level (ages 11-12)

Down With Disease – Did you know that a line of 1000 germs can fit across a period at the end of a sentence? That the kitchen is often the most germ-filled room in the house? Germs have no boundaries, so global health is really local health. Germs affect the lives of each of us across the globe, including millions of people lacking access to basic sanitation and clean water. Explore how social and economic indicators such as life expectancy and quality of education can correlate with the presence of germs, and how scientists are working to fight deadly germs to reverse the spread of disease.

The Proof is in the Logic - Do you reach conclusions using a logical and organized process? Would you like to get better at it? If so, this course will help you organize your ideas, develop the skills to craft convincing and successful arguments, and sharpen your scientific thinking. Engaging in a variety of language arts exercises and mind-bending logic puzzles, you’ll learn to construct and refute arguments using symbolic as well as numerical data. Come sharpen your skills in an area that is vital for success in pursuits involving law, computer science, mathematics, and philosophy.

E-J Level (ages 9-12)

Graphic Arts – What is it that captures our attention in billboards and advertisements? Examine what visual elements help make products and other commercial objects attractive, and create eye-catching art like that used for the most successful businesses and advertising campaigns. Explore the commercial applications of art and design, expand your aesthetic perception, and learn about the technology that supports graphic art while surveying related careers. Expand your creative skills by designing brochures, flyers, posters, newsletters, and your own works of art.
