Lewis Carroll’s Mad Hatter famously declared, “If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary-wise, what it is it wouldn’t be, and what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”
When we fall into the rabbit hole of Roger Bowman’s wonderland, we glimpse jut such an upside-down universe. Unnaturally lit, hyperbolically colored, seasonally incongruous landscapes hot impossible still lifes populated by a remarkable lexicon of objects. Bowman reconciles arbitrary collections of incompatible things and harmonized conflate time by masterfully composing the picture plan and by drawing visual and verbal connections between objects and their backdrops.
