Item Description
Everyone asks us, “Is Mary See real?” Absolutely! She’s not just an iconic figure found on boxes of See’s Candies; she was also the inspiration behind today’s flourishing candy business. She was born Mary Wiseman on September 16, 1854, in Ontario, Canada. Mary was 20 years old when she married Alexander See, and together they had three children—Charles, May and Bertha. Mary and Alexander ran a resort on Tremont Park Island until Alexander sadly passed away in 1919, leaving Mary widowed at age 64. Not too long after, her son Charles decided to move to sunny California to start his own candy business, and she moved with him and his family to settle in Pasadena, CA. They all lived in a pretty post-Victorian bungalow that can still be seen today at 426 South Marengo Street. Mary made candy in the bungalow’s black-and-white kitchen, and when Charles opened his first shop, he chose the now iconic black-and-white theme as homage to Mary’s kitchen.
Mary took pride in her candy recipes, insisting on using only the finest and freshest ingredients—a tradition continued by See’s Candies. Her favorite candy was her very own homemade Chocolate Walnut Fudge.
Throughout the history of See's Candies, Mary See has symbolized the timeless virtues of quality and friendly service…virtues we still uphold today. Mary would be proud.
