19" long x 8.5" wide, Bloge by Byron Turnoff
Byron Turnoff's artistic journey began as he set foot into the Concentration Camp Majdanek,on his first March of the Living in 1996. As he walked through Majdanek and witnessed the relics of life from before the Holocaust Byron caught sight of one worn out child's shoe. Drawn to this one individual shoe amongst thousands, Byron internalized the smell, taste, vision, sounds and touch of the Holocaust on a deeply personal level. He named the child, who in his mind owned the shoe, "Rosie". Byron felt Rosie "call out to him across seven decades." “Rosie” inspired him to create a new art form called Bloge’, which has become his signature style.
Bloge’ takes worn, commonplace items, which would be easily discarded and gives them a new life. Each item is first lacquered black, then painted with an abundance of dots, design and detail. Just as the Jewish people were considered the "untermenschen", the discards of society who were brought to the camps to be eliminated and turned into piles of incinerated garbage, so to each Bloge’ piece represents a new rebirth. In Bryron’s mind each dot represents an individual who, like “Rosie”, lost their life.
