Yount, credited as the first person to plant vines in the Valley and for whom the town of Yountville is named, inhabits what has since been named the "Ghost Block" vineyard, wandering the vines at night and keeping watch over the valley. (The fact that this particular slope on the northern edge of Yountville also borders the Pioneer cemetery undoubtedly contributes to this site's haunted reputation). Produced by Bonded Winery Number 9, the Ghost Block family of wines consist of small production, exclusive, certified organic wines made from this site and other premium vineyards in the vicinity. The 2009 Estate Oakville Cabernet is 100% Cabernet from the gravelly loam soils of the Rock Cairn Vineyard in Oakville. Aged for 24 months in 60% new French oak, this is one big, rich Cabernet, with intense blackberry, Bing Cherry, and baker's chocolate aromas and flavors, accented by notes of hibiscus, vanilla, and exotic smokey spice. It is full on the palate, with layers of baked berry flavors, creamy caramel, and toasty vanilla. Sweet tobacco laces up the fruit-filled finish, which rides smoothly along the back of ultra-polished tannins. This is for lovers of modern, sensuous Cabernet.
