Item Description

Framed, one of a kind, altered and recombined vintage photo postcards by renowned text and collage artist Carole P. Kunstadt.

Photo postcards from the early twentieth century provide an intriguing, subtle and intimate format to explore worlds unlimited in association, memory and history. Altering the images by weaving multiple views together, the pixelated scenes become intriguing alternate visions of a reality suspended from their original context.

Observation is a personal modification of the visual information one receives. The aged quality of the photograph informs and enhances the varied combinations creating simultaneous vantage points. They represent the merging of a vision of history, the moments caught and the subjective impressions which through the passage of time have been transformed.

Carole P. Kunstadt received her BFA, magna cum laude, from Hartford Art School, West Hartford, Connecticut, with a concentration in two-dimensional studies, and continued with postgraduate studies at the Akademie der Bildenen Künste in Munich, Germany. Kunstadt's works reference the material of books, deconstructing paper and text, and using it in metaphorical ways. Her devotion to books is inspired by the ability of the written word to take the reader to other places through stories, poems, and prayers. Kunstadt's process reveals how language can become visual through re-interpretation.
