Item Description
NASCAR Winston Cup Racing bombards the sense! Brilliant colors and pierciing sounds are mixed with the smell of hot tires and southern friend chicken. The feel of the sun on your face and the thrill of fierce competition completes the ensemble.
This scene has been repeated for more than forty seasons of racing. To its many millions of fans, NASCAR stock car racing is the most thrilling of sports. The combination of man, machine and high speed action are electrifying.
Martinsville Speedway and it's founder, H. Clay Earles, have been there since the beginning. The Speedway ran their first race on dirt in September of 1947. The event was won by a battered and dusty Red Byron. The winners share of the $2,000.00 purse was $500.00. In contrast, the 1993 Goody's 500 race posted awards of $66.516 with winner's share being $75,300.
The names of the "Speed Merchants" that have competed at Martinsville Speedway reads like a list of the sport's greatest. Petty, Pearson, Lorenzon, Allison, and Yarborough have all been there. Today's gladiators, Earnhardt, Jarrett, Martin, Gordon and the others join the names already etched in racing histor at the hallowed speed arena.
Nestled in the foothills of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Martinsville Speedway annually plays host to the Goody's 500 Winston Cup race. The normally quiet rural area is thrashed by the sound of racing machines. The tradition of competition that has been a part of this community for almost half a century returns. The "Speed Merchants" are back in town!
The artwork was commissioned by Goody's Manufacturing Company to commemorate the 1993 Goody's 500 at Martinsville Speedway. The artwork also adorned the cover of the official souvenir program for this event.
