Item Description

Lithograph in colors, 1964 (W. 76). Signed and numbered in pencil, from the edition of 150.  The full sheet.

Le Corbusier (1887-1965): One of the pioneers of modern architecture, the celebrated Swiss-French architect, Charles Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, better known as Le Corbusier, was also a gifted painter and printmaker.  He was born in Switzerland and became a French citizen in 1930. His career comprises five decades and his buildings are spread around Europe, India, and America.

Le Corbusier's late graphic works reveal tendencies of cubist compositions by Picasso, with whom Le Corbusier had established a long friendship. Hence, the depiction of the bull also characterizes the artistic output of the Swiss-French artist. In his graphic works, Le Corbusier often described the bull with vivid colors and grotesque deformations, emphasizing his commitment to the ‘joie de vivre’. The present lithograph is titled ‘Taureau I’ and shows a particularly powerful interpretation of the subject.
