Item Description

Lithograph in colors (M. 686). 5 ½ x 4 3/8”. Initialed by the artist in pencil.

The interior is a New Year’s greeting annotated “et nos meilleurs voeux” (our best wishes) and signed in ink by Pierrette Sorlier and Charles Sorlier, Chagall’s printer. It is very rare!

Marc Chagall was born in 1887 in Russia, and moved to Paris in 1910. Chagall enjoyed a long and prolific life creating art in the abstract and post impressionist style. Chagall created images in homage to the Jewish faith, as well as images inspired by the Bible. His unique style and use of colors is unparalleled. Like other famous French artists of his era, Chagall was granted political asylum in the United States after the Germans occupied France in 1940. Chagall would continue creating his signature style in stained glass seen in synagogues and churches. "For the Cubists," Chagall said, "a painting was a surface covered with forms in a certain order. For me a painting is a surface covered with representations of things . . . in which logic and illustration have no importance."
